Awenate Cobbina 02C will discuss his career path from the Obama White House, to the NBA, to the Biden Transition Team. Cobbina is currently the Director of Operations for the Biden-Harris Transition. As the COO of the organization tasked with ensuring the transfer of power to President Biden, Cobbina is a member of the senior leadership team and leads strategy and planning, fundraising and budgeting, and hiring for an organization that grew from inception in May 2020 to 2,200 staff. Immediately prior to joining the transition, he was the Vice President of Public and Business Affairs for Pistons Sports & Entertainment (PS&E) and the Detroit Pistons, as well as the Executive Director of the Detroit Pistons Foundation. Additionally, Cobbina serves as the Chairman of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) Executive Committee, Michigan’s public-private partnership for job creation and economic development. Previously, he served almost 6 years in the Obama White House, including roles in the Chief of Staff's Office, Office of Legislative Affairs, and Office of Management and Budget. Cobbina served as Special Assistant to the President and Policy Advisor to the Office of the Chief of Staff, where he worked with senior White House staff and administration officials to manage policy development, design strategy, and implement plans on a broad range of issues and initiatives. More recently, he also served as the Deputy Director of the Whitmer-Gilchrist Transition, Michigan’s 2018 gubernatorial transition. Cobbina graduated from Emory University and the Howard University School of Law, and previously worked at the National Football League, Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP, and the National Labor Relations Board.  Access the Zoom link.
